Enhancing the city and improving quality of life
Edison Next supports Barcelona on its energy transition journey, enhancing its historical and artistic heritage while helping to make the city more sustainable, smart, and livable. Through the redevelopment, management, and maintenance of public lighting, it is adding value to strategic areas such as the central and picturesque Ciutat Vella district, and the densely populated Eixample and Sants-Montjuïc, ensuring significant savings in both energy and emissions. Furthermore, it has introduced renewable self-generation through the installation of photovoltaic systems in the Port of Barcelona, one of the Mediterranean's most important commercial and cruise hubs.
The City of Barcelona
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is one of Europe’s most dynamic and innovative cities. A world-renowned cultural and architectural center, it uniquely balances tradition and modernity. Thanks to its strategic Mediterranean location, economic dynamism, and focus on urban quality, it serves as an international hub for research, technology, design, and sustainability. Recognized as a model smart city for its advanced environmental and digital policies, Barcelona promotes sustainable urban growth centered on the quality of life of its citizens.
The Solution

Edison Next is responsible for the management and maintenance of public lighting systems in key Barcelona districts, including Ciutat Vella (the heart of the historic center), the populous Eixample, and the expansive Sants-Montjuïc. In total, it manages nearly 52,000 lighting points, a portion of which has undergone energy and architectural upgrades.
These interventions involve the adoption of LED technology and smart lighting systems designed to improve lighting performance, overall efficiency, and system sustainability. Among the most iconic projects is the new facade lighting for Barcelona’s City Hall, featuring RGB LED lights that enhance its beauty through dynamic, sustainable color combinations and light displays.
Additionally, Edison Next has developed photovoltaic systems in the Port of Barcelona, specifically at the Puesto de Inspección Fronteriza (PIF), which handles freight and cruise traffic. The systems, installed on the office building roof and parking canopies, enable the self-consumption of green electricity, reducing emissions and stabilizing costs.
